She only has a 'party' every second year, but the past twelve months has been such an awesome achievement for her that I couldn't resist doing something. A small surprise party seemed a good option.
If you haven't thrown a surprise party for your child, let me say right now that you should. The genuine amazement on Poppet's face was just adorable. She's still fairly gobsmacked.
Husband took her out for ice cream so the guests could arrive in secret. Four little girls squealed their way into the house (with their mothers in tow, that way I got to have a party as well!) and couldn't contain their excitement. None of them had been to a surprise party before and they were ready for action!
Once they'd all arrived, the girls hid in the kitchen and when Poppet finally emerged from the stairs they shouted 'surprise'! It took a moment to sink in, and then my kid just couldn't believe it. She kept saying "someone pinch me, I swear I'm dreaming". Absolutely gorgeous.
We had a big old playdate and some red velvet cake. Lemonade for the girls and champagne for the 'ladies'. After two hours they were all on their way home, the seven year old was washed, fed and put to bed and I've cleaned up. And when she wakes up, she'll be eight! Wow.
Earned myself some pretty awesome Mummy points today. Indeedy!
PS I did NOT make that kick-arse cake, before you ask. That's what bakers are for...
